New Signs, Old Look:What You're Actually Buying

Straight answer: the vintage signs on this page are new. They're made in the style of the signs that hung on service stations, dealerships and diners, not pulled off a barn wall. That's why they're priced as wall decor, not as collector pieces.

Embossed Tin, Steel, Cast Iron or Wood:How Each Sign Is Made

Plenty of tin signs out there are a picture printed on thin, flat metal, and they look it on the wall. Here's how each kind of vintage metal sign on this page is made, the sizes it comes in and what it costs. Every photo is a real sign from the shop: put the magnifier on it and check the letters, edges and paint for yourself.

  • Embossed tin

    $15–$120 CAD

Look forLetters that stand up off the metal and throw a shadow.

The design is pressed into the sheet, so the letters and logo are raised, then finished with baked-on colour. This is the classic service-station look.

    Sizes
    • 12″ rounds & shields
    • 24″ rounds & shields
    • 18″ parking signs
    • Shaped & die-cut
    • 24″ × 5″ street signs

Pictured: Gas Clutch Repeat, $20 CAD

  • Flat printed tin

    Budget pick

    $20–$65 CAD

Look forA flat, printed face. No raised letters.

We'll say it straight: these are printed on flat tin. Most are $20 CAD, a low-cost way to fill a wall or build a big cluster of signs. If you want depth, go embossed.

    Sizes
    • 16″ × 13″ rectangles
    • 22″ ovals & shapes

Pictured: 9th Annual Winternationals, $20 CAD

  • Domed metal

    $30 CAD

Look forA face that bows out toward the rim instead of lying flat.

A round metal sign pressed into a shallow dome, so the face stands off the wall and catches light across the curve.

    Size
    • 15″ rounds

    Pictured: Gulf, $30 CAD

  • Plasma-cut steel

    $50–$220 CAD

Look forThe edge: it follows the artwork, cut out of the steel.

20-gauge steel cut to the shape of the design with a plasma torch, so there is no square of background around it. Heavier and stiffer than tin.

    Common sizes
    • 12″ × 18″
    • 14″ × 14″
    • 12″ × 15″

Pictured: Canyon Cruise Hwy 1 Shield, $75 CAD

  • Cast iron

    $30–$95 CAD

Look forA grainy cast surface with raised lettering.

Poured in a mould, so it comes out thick and heavy with the lettering raised from the face. Many have an antique or rusty finish. A few are brass plaques.

    Shapes
    • Rounds
    • Ovals
    • Plaques
    • Arrows

Hand-Painted Wood Signsby Tubby's Garage

Here's something printed tin can't fake: long wood boards with the lettering painted on by hand, in the style of the old service-station, soda-fountain and roadside signs. Some are over 80 inches long, enough to span a workbench. There are Canadian classics too, like Imperial Oil, Esso and White Rose.

These boards are hand-painted on wood by Tubby's Garage. They're new boards made in the old style, and each listing gives the size in inches so you can measure your wall first.

Vintage Sign Questions

What you're buying, how big it is, shipping to the US, what the prices are in, and sending it back. Straight answers, before it goes in your cart.

Are these real antique signs or reproductions?

They're reproductions. Every sign on this page is new, made in the style of the old service station, car dealer and diner signs, not an original pulled off a wall. That's why they're priced as wall decor instead of collector pieces.

What's the sign made of, and how big is it?

Many sign names include the size, and the sign's own page lists it too. To shop by what it's made of, use the How it's made filter at the top of the shop: embossed tin, flat tin, domed metal, plasma-cut steel, cast iron, hand-crafted wood, or street & arrow. Flat tin is the budget option, and embossed tin has raised letters. Size not listed? Ask us before you buy.

Do you ship to the US?

Yes. We ship across Canada and the US. A few signs aren't sold into the US, so if you're shopping from the US those are already hidden and you won't see them in the shop.

What currency are the prices in?

Canadian dollars. Every price on this page is in CAD.

How much is shipping?

Shipping cost and estimated delivery time are shown at checkout, before you pay. They depend on where you live and what's in your cart.

Can I pick it up instead?

Yes. Local pickup is available at our store in Mission, BC.

Can I send it back if it doesn't look right on my wall?

Yes, most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery for a refund or exchange. The sign has to be in its original condition and packaging, you pay the return shipping, and custom or personalized signs can't be returned. The full policy is in our terms.

Are you a real store?

Yes. The Badass Garage is at 8536 Shook Rd, Mission, BC V2V 7L8. We're open Tuesday to Thursday 11am to 5pm, Friday and Saturday 11am to 7pm, and Sunday 11am to 5pm, closed Mondays. Call 604-768-7500 or email info@thebadassgarage.com.

Fill That Empty Wall

The bench is set up, the tools are hung, the car's in its spot. The bare wall is the last thing left, and a few good signs are what make the place look lived in.

Most of these signs are stocked a few at a time, and a sign's own page says Low Stock when it's nearly gone. If one's caught your eye, don't count on it being there next time you look.
